Understanding Traditional Chinese Medicine’s Metaphorical Language/ Matt Han Acupuncture – Irvine & La Habra

One of the biggest challenges I faced while studying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was its unique way of expressing concepts. Unlike Western science, which relies on precise measurements and numbers, TCM describes the body’s functions and imbalances through metaphor and analogy.
For a long time, I dismissed this as unscientific and vague, struggling to fit it into the structured, fact-based way of thinking I was used to. But at some point, I had a realization: this way of describing the body is not just poetic—it’s an effective way to capture the dynamic and interconnected nature of human physiology.
Take the concept of “unblocking stagnant Qi,” for example, one of the core principles of acupuncture.
At first, it may sound esoteric or mystical. But when we consider how we naturally use language every day, it starts to make more sense.
Consider the way we talk about work processes. When things are running smoothly, we say there’s a good flow. If something is inefficient or stuck, we might say the system is clogged or bottlenecked. We even use terms like streamline to describe making things move more efficiently.
The body operates in a similar way. Organs, hormones, blood circulation, and other physiological processes all interact in a complex system. When these processes are in sync, there is harmony and flow. When there is obstruction, dysfunction arises.
In this sense, TCM’s language isn’t unscientific—it’s simply a different way of describing biological principles. Rather than breaking things down into isolated components, it focuses on how everything is interconnected, much like how a well-functioning organization or ecosystem depends on the seamless coordination of its parts.
